It's that good and I don't care about the other flaws because this gameplay makes up for it.īefore Devil May Cry 4, I had not been well versed in the Devil May Cry series. This combined with weapon switching mid combo and super tight controls make it so incredibly deep that no one could possibly hit the skill ceiling in this game. In the middle of a combo and you see an attack coming that you need to block with royal guard? you can do that, too. Want to use trickster style to mid-air dash towards an opponent and then use swordmaster attacks to juggle them in the air? you can do that. Dante is especially fun to play with his 4 different attack styles, and the ability to switch between them on the fly. Each character plays so differently, and yet they all feel well thought out. This is definitely a game I will go back and play over and over again.
There are so many characters to play as and so many weapons for each character that I always felt that there were more things to learn how to use than I had time for. I wish they had given Dante a more unique adventure, but sadly it just feels like Nero's adventure rehashed.rnrnFinally we get to the meat of it all: the combat, and boy, is it amazing. And though cutscenes have pretty good music, the music when fighting is just as dull as it was in the last game.rnrnThough I enjoy the level design in the game, I have to cry foul when the second half of the game is just going through the environments of the first half backwards with a second character. There is only the option to change the music BGM and SE volume, so there isn't a way to tweak voice volume if the voices are too quiet for you. Unfortunately, it was not as impressive in the sound department.
I played the special edition on PS4 so I got the full 1080p 60fps experience and it was a treat, but even the original versions look great and have decently high framerates throughout. It was released near the end of the first half of the 360/PS3 generation and looks great. Why would it even matter? The gameplay is 100% what you play these games for, so yeah, the story is terrible, and we're already moving on from it.rnrnNext, Devil May Cry 4 has quite an impressive presentation. rnrnWe'll start with the story, and let's face it, no Devil May Cry game has ever had a halfway decent story. 2 doesn't count and I never played DmC the reboot) there are some aspects in which it falls short and other aspects where it blows the other games out of the water. To compare it to the other Devil May Cry games (we're only talking about 1 and 3 here. I have yet to play through the additional modes, so I can't give this game a full review yet, but Devil May Cry 4 may just be my favorite character action game I've ever played.
